SPENSER LITTLE

wire / shadow art

he was in the alexander salazar fine art gallery in la jolla this month. I was in awe, each piece is made from a singular string of wire or copper. A profound, self-taught artist with no formal art training- he takes inspiration (and recreates some pieces) from the mind blowing austrian artist Egon Schiele, who has been one of my primary sources of inspiration for years; so, naturally I was fixated.

Spenser Little introduces a whole new medium, when you see it in person -which you should make a point to do if you get the chance- you see that it's all about the shadow. The wire piece itself is mesmerizing, unfortunately in the photos here they just look like great sketches, BUT the shadow creates an entirely different image feeling&expression independent from the wire part. It's like two in one... incorporating hard, soft, light, and dark all in one piece of art.
He does custom portraits too..
Too good to be true.

I was drawn into the gallery by Schieles self portrait in crouching position emulated in wire.
